Keeneland Sale Graduates at the Forefront on the Road to the Derby

September Yearling Sale grads take center stage as the Road to the Kentucky Derby (G1) highlights weekend racing. Keeneland sales alumni, led by CashCall Futurity (G1) winner Liaison, dominate the entries for Santa Anita’s Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G2). At Tampa Bay Downs, Grade 2 winner State of Play will carry high weight of 122 pounds in his first start on the dirt in the Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3), which also marks the return of Reveron, recent winner of the Gulfstream Park Derby. Four of the seven sophomores competing in the Withers Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct are September Sale graduates – Hakama, Speightscity, King Kid and How Do I Win.

When Algorithms scored a runaway win in the grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes, it stamped the son of Bernardini as a Kentucky Derby contender. It marked not only his first foray into stakes company--and off only a maiden win no less--but his first race beyond six-and-a-half furlongs. Algorithms will stay have to show he can reproduce that kind of run around two turns but there's a chance his personality as well as his pedigree could get him home.

Keeneland sales graduates flashed their classic potential this weekend, establishing themselves among the early contenders for the 2012 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Kentucky Oaks (G1). Keeneland September Yearling Sale alumni Mr. Bowling, Z Dager and Shared Property finished 1-2-3 in the Grade 3 Lecomte at Fair Grounds, while Midnight Transfer, a graduate of the 2011 April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale, won the San Pedro at Santa Anita.
