Fayette-G2 Analysis

Handicapper: Bill Howard

Meet: October 2009

Race Date: 10/31/2009

Article Order: 1

Copy:
PARADING has been keeping Grade 1 company this summer since his runaway victory in the Ben Ali-G3 here in April over this 1 1/8 mile distance; he made every pole a winning one that day but is a versatile runner who can come from anywhere and win; there is a good chance you may see him on the front end again here without any desperate-to-be-on-the-lead runners in this year's Fayette; he'll be hard to beat with Desormeaux back in the irons. PUBLIC SPEAKER has won two stakes in a row in Chicago, but note Carey Memorial was in the slop after it was taken off turf; he's been beaten only once on polytrack and breaking from the rail, he'll be a worthy foe to the top pick; he displayed lots of gameness in that hard-fought win in his only prior start at Keeneland for $50K last April when he was claimed. BLAME exits a strong second in the Super Derby-G2 at La Downs at this distance; he won the Curling Stakes at Saratoga going 1 1/8 miles two back under Theriot, who is here to ride; he graduated last year over the Keeneland poly and has improved with every race since; he'll be sitting ready to strike should the top picks soften one another up early. DOMINICAN finished 2nd in last year's Fayette and followed PARADING home in the Ben Ali this past spring; he is an honest horse who has settled for minor checks this year, but he worked a bullet half-mile on Oct 27 for this and has an enviable 10-for-12 in the money stat on synthetic surfaces; worth using in exotics for sure as also is WICKED STYLE. The latter was kinda flat in the Ky Cup Classic-G2 last time out , but prior to to that was a good 3rd in the 1 3/16 mile Washington Park Handicap-G3 on Arlington's poly; he's quick from the bell and could pose a pace threat, but feel he'll sit in a stalking spot as he's breaking from the 7-hole today; remember he won the Breeders' Futurity-G1 here as a 2-year-old under Albarado.

Copy:
The Grade 2 Fayette draws a tough bunch of 3 year olds. Any one of the 10 horses entered could pull this off. Blame can boast the best last race Beyer figure and the lightly raced Arch colt looks to be hitting his best stride right now. Second to Regal Ransom last out in the Super Derby, Blame closed on a very slow pace set by the winner. He should get a solid pace in front of him here and expect him to be very tough. Parading is always a threat. A consistent runner, he exits a good performance in the Grade 1 Goodwood and his Beyers suggests he is quite capable in this field. Wicked Style draws top jock Albarado to the irons. The 4 year old Macho Uno colt likes the surface here and should be up close in the early going.

Mike Battaglia's picks for October 31

Handicapper: Mike Battaglia

Meet: October 2009

Race Date: 10/31/2009

Copy:
1st Race
HIBUSCUS DRIVE (#8) ran evenly in her start over this track. She drops a notch in class for her return and appears to be in a good spot to break her maiden for leading trainer Ken McPeek. MORIGAMI (#1) closed well at Arlington and shouldn’t mind the added distance today. MY EYES FOR YOU (#6) rates a chance.

2nd Race
IRASCIBULL (#9) didn’t show much in his last race but is capable of better. Look for him to rebound with a solid performance for trainer Larry Jones and jockey Terry Thompson. CHARLIE TRUMPER (#6) just missed last out. He drops in class and is definitely the one to beat. LOST CAMPER (#1) has only had one race and should move forward off that effort.

3rd Race
SOUTH BEACH LUV (#5) ran well when dropped to this level last out. She cuts back in distance this afternoon but still rates the slight edge in a very well-matched claiming test. LADY SEATTLE (#2) drops to a career-low claiming level and will be tough to beat with Kent Desormeaux picking up the mount. GERI ROAD (#9) won back-to-back races at Kentucky Downs and has to be considered.

4th Race
ARMSTRONG MILL (#8) didn’t fire on the Polytrack last out but looks like a solid bet to win as he moves back to the turf today. LUNAR LABOR (#7) is a Jonathan Sheppard runner who can definitely get the distance and figures to be the main competition. TIGER’S ROCK (#4) comes off of an easy win at Kentucky Downs and fits in here.

5th Race
POSITIVE SPLIT (#3) was no match for an impressive winner last out but ran well to finish second in that one. Look for him to break his maiden in this one. ZIP AROUND (#5) is a first- timer from the Steve Asmussen barn. He has been training steadily at Churchill and will probably be ready. ALBANY ROAD (#6) also makes his first start and trainer Christophe Clement is good with debuting runners.

6th Race
DUBIOUS MISS (#8) makes his turf debut after comes a narrow loss in the Grade 2 Kentucky Cup Classic. Anything close to his best would make him a winner and the only question is how he will handle the surface change. MUTADDA (#4) looks second best. GRESHAM (#5) could add value to the gimmicks.

7th Race
ACCREDIT (#3) was good enough to win the Grade 2 Churchill Downs Stakes back in May. He was overmatched in the Grade 1 Metropolitan and faded after showing speed in his comeback race in September. He has been training well since returning to Kentucky and looks best for trainer Mike Maker and jockey Julien Leparoux. TEND (#1) was a game winner the last time he ran over this surface and he is the one to beat. CARNACKS CHOICE (#2) loves this track and can’t be overlooked.

8th Race
PROJECT ROSE (#3) comes off a game win on opening day. She posted a bullet work on Wednesday and trainer Jonathan Sheppard figures to have her ready for the repeat score. MY BABY BABY (#8) stumbled leaving the gate last out but came out of that incident in good order and her best would make her dangerous. GLOWING (#1) makes her U.S. debut and gets Lasix for the first time.

9th Race—Fayette (G2)
PARADING (#3) ran a huge race to capture Keeneland’s Ben Ali (G3) in April. He comes off back-to-back fourth-place finishes against Grade 1 runners in California and looks like a good bet to regain his winning form for trainer Shug McGaughey and jockey Kent Desormeaux. BLAME (#9) is an improving 3-year-old. He ran very well to finish second in the Grade 2 Super Derby and has been training sharply over this surface. PUBLIC SPEAKER (#1) has proven to be an excellent claim. He keeps getting better and has to be respected.

10th Race
STRADIVINSKY (#4) was overmatched in a stakes race at Woodbine last out but the drop back in against claimers should make him a winner in the finale. ZORAN (#10) has won three of his last four but has never run well on Polytrack. PARIOLI’S TRICK (#6) is a contender at decent odds.

Jeremy Plonk's Keeneland Keys for Saturday, Oct. 31

Handicapper: Jeremy Plonk

Meet: October 2009

Race Date: 10/31/2009

Copy:
What to Watch for Today: It may be closing day, but I can’t wait to get this one started. Barbaro’s 2-year-old kid brother, Lentenor, makes his racing debut in today’s fifth race for owner Lael Stables and trainer Michael Matz. Plus, we get to see the return of one of the fastest horses ever to compete on the Keeneland Polytrack, Carnacks Choice. If that’s not enough, we get a battle of the sexes in the Fayette Handicap, which also features past Blue Grass, Breeders Futurity and Ben Ali winners!

Weather: Blustery winds for the second straight day are forecasted, but less strong than what was seen Friday. Morning rain showers are expected with temperatures taking a dip of nearly 30 degrees from Friday’s unseasonably warm temperatures.

Polycapping 101: In this section, we’ll get race and horse specific to help your handicapping.

Only four trainers have won two or more maiden claiming routes on the Polytrack, and two of them appear in Race 1 this afternoon – Tom Proctor (Morigami) and Ken McPeek (Hibiscus Drive). Almost shockingly, only 2 of the 21 races in this situation have netted a winner above 10-1 odds, and none above 14-1.

Trainer Michael Stidham tries to shorten the game for South Beach Luv in Race 3 today, but note that of the barn’s 10 wins on the Keeneland Polytrack, only 2 have come when turning back from a route to a sprint.

With a large field going 1-1/2 miles on turf in Race 4, think deep closers. The last 8 races over this course and distance with 10 or more starters have produced average winners a whopping 11 lengths off the pace after the opening half-mile and only one horse within 4-1/2 lengths of the lead at that juncture.

All eyes will be on Lentenor in Race 5 as Barbaro’s baby bro debuts. Note that first-time starters have held their own quite well, winning 8 of the 27 maiden special weight juvenile races at 7 furlongs all-time on the Polytrack. Six of those winning firsters at this distance were within 1.5 lengths of the lead after the opening half-mile. Favorites are a rock-solid 10-27 (37%) in this situation, and it will interesting to see if the public opts for Lentenor or Positive Spirit, a recent runner-up for a Ken McPeek barn that has won a record 3 juvenile 7-furlong MSW races all-time (tied with Dale Romans).

Favorites have scored just over 15% of the time in turf miles since the fall ’06 meeting, so don’t be afraid of a price in Race 6. The chalk 0-6 in this scenario during the current meeting, and the average winner this meet and all-time sits a shade below 9-1 odds. Julien Leparaoux has 12 turf mile wins here during that time; no other active Keeneland regular has more than 3.

Carnacks Choice returns to his favorite course in Race 7 when he makes his first start since a spring-meet Keeneland win. Note that he’s competed in 2 of the 3-fastest races ever at 6 furlongs on the Keeneland Polytrack. His April 9, 2008 victory in 1:08.49 is the third-fastest race ever on this track, while he finished third by a length in the 2008 Phoenix Stakes won by Sing Baby Sing in 1:08.48, the second-fastest time ever recorded here. (He Loves Me Not holds the track record at 1:08.30, set during the ’07 Sprint meeting.). And for the record, Carnacks Choice owns the second-fastest time ever at 7 furlongs as well (1:21.05 in the ’07 Lafayette Stakes), only topped by Informed Decision’s ’08 Raven Run Stakes clocking of 1:20.86.

Feature Race Play: The Grade 2 $150,000 Fayette Handicap puts a bow on the fall meet stakes schedule in Race 9 today. Tizfiz will try to become the first filly or mare to win this race since Chou Croute in 1972 when she meets a deep field of 10 that includes ’07 Blue Grass champ Dominican, ’07 Breeders Futurity victor Wicked Style and ’09 Ben Ali dominator Parading.

Don’t get too hung up on distance. All 3 Fayette winners in the Polytrack era raced shorter than 1-1/8 miles last time out. But there’s no denying the brilliance of Parading’s Ben Ali Stakes over this trip during the spring meet, where he posted the second-fastest time ever on the Polytrack (1:47.82). Jade’s Revenge also is a Ben Ali winner (2007), winning multiple stakes locally, and he bounced back nicely to form here 16 days ago for trainer Graham Motion.

Parading must tote 123 pounds, giving away 4 to 7 pounds, and the sophomores getting that 7-pound break include Super Derby runner-up Blame and Indiana Derby runner-up Giant Oak. Neither are slouches, and the weight allowance will be a big boost. Giant Oak is by Giant’s Causeway, one of the most dominant sires of the Keeneland Poly era. Blame won over this track last fall sprinting, and has proven to be a tough hombre in routes this year.

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin swept both divisions of the Valley View Stakes here last week and tries for a third high-dollar heist of the meet with longshot National Pride.

This is a wonderful race, and a fabulous way to bid you all farewell on another great Keeneland meeting. Thanks for reading and all the kind and thoughtful emails. On the way out the door, I’ll leave you with the sophomores, Giant Oak and Blame, in an exacta box with Parading.

A tip of the hat to Keeneland's Nick Nicholson, Julie Balog and many others on the staff for their dedication to helping horseplayers by utilizing the power of the internet.

Jeremy Plonk's Keeneland Keys for Friday, Oct. 30

Handicapper: Jeremy Plonk

Meet: October 2009

Race Date: 10/30/2009

Copy:
What to Watch for Today: With only two days remaining in the meet, we super-size the Friday offering with a 10-race card. G3 Washington Park Handicap winner Gran Estreno is among the leading players entered today, competing in Race 4.

Jockeys E.T. Baird and Julien Leparoux both won two races Thursday, and the former continues to dazzle on the front end and debunk many Polytrack myths that you can't win on the lead.

Weather: Good news, bad news. The good news is temperatures are expected to climb past 70 degrees. The bad news is showers and winds approaching 20 mph also are on the forecast. Keep an eye on the flags and the changes as turf races could be impacted.

Polycapping 101: In this section, we’ll get race and horse specific to help your handicapping.

To say we don’t see many 1-1/8 miles maiden claimers on the Keeneland Polytrack would be an understatement. Today’s first race is just the third ever (a pair run during ’07 fall meet, one of which was won by a Tom Proctor trainee – Proctor sends out Matai in Race 1 today). Another to watch would be Royal Rossi, trained by Mike Stidham, who joins Proctor, Ken McPeek and Hugh Robertson as the only conditioners to win two or more maiden claiming routes on Poly at any distance.

Of trainer Merrill Scherer’s 15 wins on the Keeneland Poly, 10 have come with mid- to upper-level claimers (between $25,000 and $50,000), two of them already this meeting. Simply put: He spots his horses very well. Give Attractive Ride a longer look in Race 3, a $50,000 claiming sprint.

Don’t get too snobbish in your class evaluation in Race 4. Of the three previous optional claiming/allowance races held this meeting, the winners last raced at Presque Isle, Hoosier and Kentucky Downs. Last-out Presque Isle starters also won twice in six offerings last fall at this class level.

Arlington invaders have accounted for 3 of the 4 races held this meeting for $30,000 non-winners of 2 lifetime claiming. In Race 5, give extra consideration to Steps Silver Halo for that reason, as well as Moral, who comes from Arlington this summer via a pitstop at Kentucky Downs.

Since the entire Race 6 field has just one effort to show over the Keeneland Polytrack on paper, let’s look for some pedigree clues. Unbridled’s Song has produced 16 winners over this Poly, but only 4 of them at 6 furlongs or less. He’s represented by firsters Warbling and Patti’s Regal Song, with the former blazing a.m. bullets at Churchill. Sire Sky Mesa (rep’d by Blue Yonder) has produced 8 winners, including 2 first-time starters, over this track, including ’09 Blue Grass winner General Quarters. Meanwhile, Forestry (rep’d by Aljanel) has 6 winners, all maidens and three of them MSW older horses like this. More Than Ready (rep’d by Iwillinaminute) also has had 6 winners, including impressive firster Ready’s Image during the ’07 spring meeting. Note that Pulpit (rep’d by Sister Dyer) has had an impressive 12 winners, but only 3 in sprints.

While we’re at it, let’s talk genes with the Race 8 babies, who also have one combined start at Keeneland. See the stats above on Unbridled’s Song (rep’d by Life Begins), Pulpit (rep’d by Heavenly Court) and Forestry (rep’d by Sacred Forest). Young sire Ghostzapper (rep’d by Dynazapper) got his first Kee Poly win earlier this meet routing, while fellow relative newcomers Afleet Alex (rep’d by Lady Laurie Snow) and Value Plus (red’d by Reba’s Values) are both waiting to break the seal. Of the 5 wins for Arch (rep’d by Darling Desha), 4 have come sprinting. Harlan’s Holiday (Harlan’s Princess) has 3 wins, all in cheaper claiming or starter races. The powerhouses here include A.P. Indy (rep’d by Rendition), who has 16 wins, among them a 2YO MSW win already this meeting by New York-raiding Protesting. Giant’s Causeway (rep’d by Toll) has 15 wins, but none of them with 2-year-olds here and only 5 of them sprinting.

Feature Race Play: We’ll give the feature spotlight to Race 9 given its traditional place in the race order for the main event, though Race 7 takes no backseat in purse or allowance conditions. Race 9 is a 1-1/2 miles turf allowance, a race where the average winner has been 6 lengths behind after the opening half-mile since the ’06 fall meeting.

Three trainers in today’s ninth have won twice at the marathon turf trip at Keeneland over the past four years. Graham Motion (Attessa and Million Seller, who run uncoupled), Rusty Arnold (After Thought) and John Glenney (Miss Rufus) have rung the bell twice with winners at this distance on the local turf. After Thought has a lot of appeal with that A.P. Indy on the damside of the pedigree and fact that jockey Robby Albarado has won a colony-best 5 races at the turf marathon trip since the ’06 fall meet. I’ll lean that way despite a very unattractive post.

Mike Battaglia's picks for October 30

Handicapper: Mike Battaglia

Meet: October 2009

Race Date: 10/30/2009

Copy:
1st Race
COAL CUTTER (#6) flashed some speed in his debut and drops in for a tag today. Trainer Wayne Catalano has not had a good meet but this one could win with jockey Robby Albarado picking up the mount. GOOD PROSPECTING (#7) broke poorly in his Keeneland debut and lost his best chance. A better start makes him dangerous. ROYAL ROSSI (#2) fits with these.

2nd Race
HEAVENLY SURPRISE (#12) was second last out at Turfway. He owns a win over the Keeneland strip and rates the slight edge against a fairly weak bunch. ECHOES RESOUNDING (#11) looked good winning and apprentice jockey Ben Creed won his first Keeneland race on Wednesday. GOLD CROP (#9) is a solid contender.

3rd Race
SOUL COAXING (#1) is lightly raced and appears to be improving with every start. He can rally from off of what figures to be a fast pace and looks like a winner for trainer Hugh Robertson and jockey Jesus Castanon. ATTRACTIVE RIDE (#5) has had a good year and is definitely the one to beat. CIELO CLASSIC (#3) has the speed to be dangerous.

4th Race
GRAN ESTRENO (#1) had a six-race win streak snapped when he hooked graded stakes runners in Canada. The drop back in class will make him hard to beat today. JAMALUDIN (#3) overcame trouble to win over this track and a repeat of that one makes him dangerous. VACATION (#6) has the class but doesn’t seem to want to win.

5th Race
ORIGINAL INK (#4) comes off a solid runner-up finish last out and drops a notch in class. He looks like a solid bet to win with jockey Julien Leparoux riding for trainer Dale Romans. MORAL (#1) drops in for a tag for the first time and figures to be the main competition. SMARTEN DESTINY (#9) gets blinkers and could improve.

6th Race
CUTTING EDGE (#11) hooked a tough field in her debut and faded after showing some speed. She has trained well here and rates the edge over several well-bred first-time starters. WARBLING (#4) makes her debut for trainer Eddie Kenneally off a series of good works at Churchill. WYNCHASE (#8) has worked well here at Keeneland.

7th Race
ESCROW (#2) just missed in his first race back after a short layoff. If he handles the turf he figures to beat these. CALCULATING JIMMY (#7) has the speed to be on or near the lead and is the one to catch. WESTERNPROSPECTOR (#6) rates a chance.

8th Race
DYNAZAPER (#1) showed big improvement in her second career start. She worked well over the Keeneland Polytrack and looks like a solid bet to get the win for trainer Bill Mott and jockey Kent Desormeaux. RENDITION (#10) exits a tough race at Saratoga and should fare better in this one. LIFE BEGINS (#3) is a first-timer with solid works.

9th Race
MISS RUFUS (#9) is the only runner in here with a win at today’s distance of a mile and a half. Trainer John Glenney is very good with these marathon runners and should have her ready for another score. CRUISIN’NTHEBRIDLE (#3) looked good winning last out and is bred to handle the added distance. PURE HEAVEN (#8) is a solid contender.

Jeremy Plonk's Keeneland Keys for Thursday, Oct. 29

Handicapper: Jeremy Plonk

Meet: October 2009

Race Date: 10/29/2009

Copy:
What to Watch for Today: Ocean Colors, a 3-year-old daughter of legendary Kentucky Derby-winning filly Winning Colors, makes her Keeneland return in the Race 8 allowance feature today.

Weather: Pristine autumn conditions are in the forecast, with mostly sunny skies and a high temperature of 66 degrees.

Polycapping 101: In this section, we’ll get race and horse specific to help your handicapping.

Maiden claimers route 1-1/16 miles on the Polytrack, and while that might sound chaotic to open the card, note that favorites are 8-for-21 (38%) in these situations all-time and none of the winners have been above 14-1. Arlington invaders have won 3 of the 4 such races held at this meeting, and all 4 winners raced within 2-1/4 lengths of the lead after the opening half-mile.

Five horses in Race 2 will be making their second start of the fall meet, horses I like to call “run-backs.” Heading into this week’s racing, we’ve seen 5 run-backs already win this meet and traditionally closing week is a haven for that maneuver.

Speaking of “run-backs,” be on the lookout in Race 4 today. It’s at 1-1/8 miles on turf, and of the 4 races over this course and distance this meeting, 2 of them were won by horses who already had started at the meeting and came back on two weeks’ rest. Yolo, Forest Trail, Pari and She’s Due fit the bill.

Of jockey Kent Desormeaux’s first 10 wins at the fall meeting, 4 have come at the 1-1/16 miles distance on Polytrack. He partners with class-dropping Stream Cat in Race 5 today at that trip.

Favorites are a sizzling 8-for-14 (57%) in 2-year-old maiden special weight races this meeting. The babies will be put to the test in Race 6. Surprisingly, only 3 of the 14 events this meeting have been won by first-time starters – only 3 of the entrants in Race 6 have had any afternoon experience.

Don’t be afraid of a price bomber in Race 7. Of the 10 biggest longshot winners of the entire 2009 fall meeting, 6 of them have come at 7 furlongs on the Polytrack.

Also be on price patrol in the Race 9 finale, where lower-level claimers route the tough 1-1/8 miles distance on Polytrack. Of the 4 such races this meeting, we’ve had a pair of 11-1 winners and a 7-1 price as well. Horses running back for the second time at the meet have done exceptionally well in these spots during past and present fall meets (cheaper horses, route distance). Give a longer look at run-back horses Spark of Humor, Six Shots and Biggerbadderbetter.

Feature Race Play: Turf sprinters are in the spotlight in the Race 8 allowance feature. Note that only 1 of the 14 turf dashes here since the ’06 fall meeting have been won by posts 1-2 (lone winner came from the 2-hole).

Only 4 of 14 winners led after the opening half-mile, with the average winner still more than 2 lengths behind at that juncture. None of the 14 winners turned back in distance from a previous start greater than 6-1/2 furlongs, while 13 of the 14 exited turf preps.

When you toss out the inside two posts, horses making a surface change, and those who ran more than 6-1/2 furlongs last time, this 12-horse field pares down to just: Elusive Sparkle, That’s So Funny and Simply Seattle (Antepova is on the also-eligible list). That’s So Funny and Simply Seattle appear to be speed horses, so I’ll give the edge to the late-running Elusive Sparkle under Calvin Borel.

Mike Battaglia's picks for October 29

Handicapper: Mike Battaglia

Meet: October 2009

Race Date: 10/29/2009

Copy:
1st Race
FAR THINKING (#6) is a first-time starter with decent works. She hooks a weak field for her debut and could spring the mild upset. METRO DEVIL (#1) figures to get a good trip from the inside post and is the one to beat with Leandro Goncalves picking up the mount. MISS MARPLE (#10) has been in the money in 10 of her 13 races and can’t be left out of the gimmicks.

2nd Race
TALLY UP (#3) has won three of five since coming back after a long layoff. He will be rallying from just off of the pace and rates the edge for trainer Mike Maker and jockey Julien Leparoux. MATZ (#11) has only had two career wins but has the speed to be on or near the lead and is the one to catch. KEY LOW (#8) has shown big improvement since being claimed and is a definite threat.

3rd Race
AL NASR DREAM (#12) faded after setting the pace last out on the turf but the runner up in that one came back to dominate an allowance field on Sunday. The big class drop is a bit puzzling but anything close to his best makes him a winner today. DUMBLEDORE (#11) comes off an even effort against Cape San Blas, who also came back to win on Sunday. He is the one to beat. TRULY AMAZING (#2) could add value to the gimmicks.

4th Race
PARI (#6) closed strongly to win over this turf course earlier in the meet. She appears to be improving and is capable of the repeat score in a tough allowance race. FOREST TRAIL (#5) is back on the grass after an even effort on the Polytrack. She looks like the one to catch. CLEAR POND (#8) is the definite class in here but has been off for nearly a year and may need a race.

5th Race
WISDOM WALK (#6) came back after a long layoff to win two in a row in impressive fashion. This is a much tougher spot but he appears to be capable of the class hike and can continue his streak this afternoon. MR. SOUL (#3) is winless this year but drops a notch in class and could be hard to catch. STREAM CAT (#5) is a graded stakes winner of over $700,000 and is a definite threat dropping in for a tag for the first time.

6th Race
EL COMMODORE (#8) exits a tough race at Belmont where the third place finisher came back to win and the winner was second in the Grade 3 in Canada in his next start. He posted a nice work since that race and could move forward today. SAINTLY TALE (#7) is one of several first-time starters who are training well and look like solid contenders. GALIENTOS (#5) is working at Churchill and trainer Steve Asmussen is always dangerous.

7th Race
MOON TOWN (#3) showed good courage coming through on the rail in his maiden win over this surface. He should be in rallying from just off the pace again and rates the slight edge in another tough allowance race. STRONG COMMITMENT (#12) just got up to break his maiden at Belmont and has trained very well over the Keeneland strip. Jockey Robby Albarado takes off the top pick to ride this one for trainer Shug McGaughey. COACH GRAVY (#10) rates a chance.

8th Race
OCEAN COLORS (#10) won her only start on the turf at Churchill back in June. Her only two bad races have come in the slop and she rates the edge in this turf sprint. STEALIN’ KISSES (#1) drops in class after hooking much better in recent races. She prefers more distance but figures to run well for trainer D. Wayne Lukas and jockey Terry Thompson. OVERANDBEAUTY (#9) has the speed to be dangerous.

9th Race
FIRST MOVEMENT (#2) has finished first or second in 13 of his last 14 races. He has never run at Keeneland but loves the synthetic surfaces and looks like a good bet to take the finale. SIX SHOTS (#9) has the advantage of a good runner up finish over the Keeneland Polytrack and will be running at the end. JUSTAROUNDMIDNIGHT (#10) rates a chance.

Jeremy Plonk's Keeneland Keys for Wednesday, Oct. 28

Handicapper: Jeremy Plonk

Meet: October 2009

Race Date: 10/28/2009

Copy:
What to Watch for Today: We open the final four days of the 2009 fall meeting this afternoon, and as is our weekly kick-off custom, we take a look back at the “trends that were” for the previous week of action.

Favorites scored a perfectly satisfying one-third of the time during the past week on Polytrack, going 12-for-36 and performing as you might expect as the meet builds. The winning favorites by week have risen from 17% to 29% to 33% as the racing becomes more familiar to horseplayers each passing week of a season. The average odds on the winners also have steadily declined from 11.86-to-1 to 7.44-to-1 to 5.54-to-1 last week.

Speed played well on the Polytrack in sprints, as the average winner when you toss out the one biggest closer was just .98 lengths off the pace after the opening half-mile. Routers were just 2.15 lengths off the lead after the opening-half mile when you remove the biggest closer of the week. That number is more than a full length closer to the pace on average than each of the previous two weeks of the season, as well as the all-time Polytrack average of -3.33 lengths in routes.

On the turf in 11 races last week, forwardly placed horses won 6 times, but unfathomably deep closers also won 3 times (twice at 1-1/2 miles). Favorites were just 2-for-11 on grass and just 5-for-23 on the meeting (22%). On Polytrack, by comparison, favorites have won 28% overall this meet.

Weather: Wet conditions Tuesday and into early Wednesday morning are expected to give way to afternoon sunshine and high temperatures right around the 60-degree mark. Keep an eye on the course conditions and changes as Races 3 and 7 are scheduled for the turf.

Polycapping 101: In this section, we’ll get race and horse specific to help your handicapping.

Early speed has been deadly in maiden claiming sprinters this season as we open Race 1 for a $40,000 tag at 6 furlongs. Eight of the 10 races at the meet so far have been within 1-1/2 lengths of the lead after the opening half-mile. Horses from Arlington lead the charge at this class level during the meet with 4 winners (Turfway 3), so give a long look at speedy Sea Scamp from Chi-town. Race 4 also is for $80,000 maiden claimers sprinting 7 furlongs. Monte is the lone Arlington rep in that field and exits a very strong race while adding blinkers. Note that first-time starters have won just 2 of the 34 all-time MCL races at 7 furlongs!

Speaking of Arlington, Race 2 is a $30,000 non-winners of 2 claimer. Of the 4 such races run this meet, 3 have been won by Arlington raiders. Rainbow Sky and Daunbeforethemast would appear to be sitting pretty. Also note that 3 of the 4 winners at this level this fall moved from turf-to-Polytrack, just as this pair both attempts.

As we look at Race 3, note that turf sprints traditionally are no place for a surface change at Keeneland. While only 14 have been run since the ’06 fall meet at any level, 13 were captured by horses exiting a turf sprint race at 6-1/2 furlongs or shorter. It’s almost impossible to believe, but only Del Mar invader Hockeythehayman exits a turf sprint among this field. Perfect Officer certainly would qualify as a proven turf sprinter, however his last race was rained off the Meadowlands grass to the dirt.

Turfway shippers have fared extremely well historically in fall meet starter allowance races, winning 8 of the 17 offered to date on the Polytrack. Keep that in mind as you eyeball race 5.

Two-year-olds go a mile on the grass in Race 7, and if a lack of running lines has you scratching your head for an angle, consider pedigrees. Sparky’s Dream has a massive edge here, as sire Giant’s Causeway has produced 6 winners on the Kee lawn since the ’06 fall meet. The only other sire in this race represented by a winner during that time is Johar (Martita Sangrita), who has a single local grass winner.

Trainer Barclay Tagg has likely favorite Doc N Roll in the Race 9 finale (as well as well-backed Academy Run in Race 6 today). Tagg has won just twice on the Polytrack at Keeneland, with both horses coming off of dirt preps. His runners Wednesday both come off of grass races. In fact, he’s only tried to go turf-to-synthetic on 6 occasions all-time at any track, never winning (according to DRF.com Formulator stats). While both look very good on paper, perhaps we might swing against them in hopes of landing a bigger fish.

Feature Race Play: A full field of 12 allowance fillies clash in Race 8, the main event on the Wednesday card. Favorites are 0-for-7 in seven-furlong allowance races this meeting, and these races have produced 15-1, 22-1 and 40-1 winners. Five of the winners came out of turf races, and five of the winners also turned back in distance from a mile last time out. Both factors could bode well for Rajpur Road, on the rise off a turf mile win at Kentucky Downs.

Both of trainer Darrin Miller’s wins at the current meeting have come at 7 furlongs on the Polytrack, and he’ll try to add to that with Excelente, luring Julien Leparoux to ride. The Frenchman has 4 wins at the distance so far this meeting, most of any rider.

Let’s keep it simple to open the week and get some win-place action on Rajpur Road, whose sire, Arch, has produced 5 Polytrack sprint winners in recent fall meetings.

Mike Battaglia's picks for October 28

Handicapper: Mike Battaglia

Meet: October 2009

Race Date: 10/28/2009

Copy:
1st Race
SEA SCAMP (#4) faded after setting the pace in his debut but the runner-up in that one came back to win over this track last week in impressive fashion. He drops in for a tag and looks best for trainer Tom Proctor and jockey Jesus Castanon. GENTLEMAN JOHN (#3) also takes the class drop. He gets in light with promising bug boy Ben Creed and is the one to beat. BREWER (#2) was well beaten last out but the winner drew off to score by 7 lengths and the runner up came back to win next out.

2nd Race
RAINBOW SKY (#1) has been running well at Arlington and her best would make her tough to beat with jockey Julien Leparoux picking up the mount for trainer Tom Proctor. MIMI’S KIDS (#11) comes off a game maiden score at Turfway but will have to overcome the outside post. PEARL OF VALOR (#8) rates a chance.

3rd Race
PERFECT OFFICER (#5) is the class in here and should be running at the end in a race that will have a lively pace. Leading rider Robby Albarado has the mount and this one looks like a winner. HOCKEYTHEHAYMAN (#7) is undefeated in three starts. He faces much tougher today but he continues to improve and is the one to beat. TURFISTE (#3) is a bit erratic but his best makes him dangerous.

4th Race
PETECAROL (#9) was clearly second-best in a stakes race at Laurel last out. He drops back in against maidens this afternoon and looks like a solid bet to win for the leading connections of trainer Ken McPeek and jockey Robby Albarado. FLEXTHEGOLDENPIPES (#10) comes off a dull effort at Belmont but gets blinkers for the first time and posted a solid work over the Keeneland strip. MONTE (#2) exits a tough race at Arlington and rates a chance.

5th Race
MILWAUKEE QUEEN (#10) has finished in the money in 10 of her 11 races this year. She was second in her only start at Keeneland and rates the edge in this starter allowance test. MAGICAL PRIZE (#6) runs her best races over this surface and will be running at the end. STORM BY YOU (#8) could go a long way on the front end.

6th Race
ACADEMY RUN (#6) just missed in his debut on the Belmont turf. He posted a bullet work over the Keeneland Polytrack and appears to be in a good spot to get his maiden win for trainer Barclay Tagg and jockey Julien Leparoux. THE BIG FINISHER (#10) flashed speed last out and gets hot rider Robby Albarado for this one. MALCOM’S DELITE (#9) ran poorly as the favorite in his debut but could improve with the addition of blinkers.

7th Race
ORCHESTRATOR (#1) was impressive breaking her maiden despite the breaking from the outside post going 1 1/16 miles on the Polytrack. She figures to be in good position from the inside this afternoon and she handled the turf well at Saratoga. She looks like another live one for trainer Ken McPeek and jockey Robby Albarado. SCREEN LEGEND (#3) has never raced on the grass but beat the top pick at Arlington. She was overmatched in the Darley Alcibiades (G1) and is definitely the one to beat today. SUZANNE (#6) is a contender.

8th Race
DIAMOND SONG (#12) comes off an even effort last out and broke her maiden over this track last year. She has the tactical speed to be in good position throughout and rates a slight edge in a well-matched race. WILD POPPY (#11) has been running very well on the turf and if she takes to the Polytrack she will be tough to beat. EXCELENTE (#7) has the class to win with her best performance.

9th Race
APACHE HONOR (#9) faded after pressing a fast pace last out. The drop in class and cutback to six furlongs could make him a winner in this one. GANDOLPH FINCH (#6) also takes the class drop and is the one to beat at this level. HYRULE (#2) is good right now and has to be respected.

Jeremy Plonk's Keeneland Keys for Sunday, Oct. 25

Handicapper: Jeremy Plonk

Meet: October 2009

Race Date: 10/25/2009

Copy:
What to Watch for Today: We've got a massive pick 6 carryover of $254,603 heading into the final Sunday of the meeting, which also serves as the finale to week 3 of 4 for the fall stand.

Put on your route shoes! Three routes open the first four races on the card and everything gets capped off with a great field of 1-1/2 miles turf marathon runners in the Dowager Stakes. Two fillies from the Grade 1 Yellow Ribbon on the west coast come east in search of the $125,000 purse.

Weather: Mostly sunny skies with a temps in the mid-50s are forecasted for Sunday, making a perfect end to the third week of the meeting.

Polycapping 101: In this section, we’ll get race and horse specific to help your handicapping.

Maiden claiming routers open the program. First-time starters have won just once in the 17 previous maiden claiming routes on Polytrack. Overall, 11 of the 17 winners had raced at a mile or longer last time out.

Basement level $7,500 claimers sprint the tough 7-furlong distance in Race 3. We’ve only had 3 races in this situation on the Poly, but note that the four $7,500 claimers at all distances so far this meeting have been split between Kentucky Downs and Turfway shippers two apiece. In fact, in the 8 basement level claimers over the past two fall meets, 7 of the 8 winners last raced at Turfway or Kentucky Downs.

Race 4 marks the third 1-1/16 miles race on the early portion of the card. Jockey Julien Leparoux has 28 wins at the distance, Robby Albarado 20 and Kent Desormeaux has 17. Miguel Mena (11) and Shaun Bridgmohan (10) also have done well at the distance.

Don’t over-emphasize surface in Race 5. There have been a 28 upper-level claiming races in the Poly era during fall meets ($40,000 and above), and they’ve been won by 12 horses coming off the turf, 12 off the all-weather surface and 4 off the dirt, respectively.

Surface definitely matters in Race 6, as Keeneland turf routes demand turf runners. Of the 32 races on grass run at this distance since the ’06 fall meeting, 29 were coming off of a grass prep all at a mile or longer (27 of them raced at 1-1/16 miles or longer last time out).

Two-year-old maiden special weights have been locked in by bettors this meet, to the tune of 7 winning favorites from the first 11 offerings. Watch the board closely in Race 7. First-time starters have accounted for only 3 of the first 11 baby MSWs.

Watch trainer Merrill Scherer’s Devil Approved It in Race 9. The sharp claiming trainer has won 11 races on the Polytrack here with horses entered for a claiming price between $20,000 and $50,000 and really spots horses at these middle claiming levels very well.

Feature Race Play: Deep closers have historically dominated 1-1/2 miles turf races at Keeneland, and we saw that back-to-back earlier this week when Silver Mountain and Cloudy’s Knight rallied from 11-1/2 and 20 lengths back after the opening half-mile to win separate marathons on grass. With a field of 11 in today’s $125,000 Dowager Stakes, I’d expect that trend to continue.

Jonathan Sheppard trains Winter View in search of his record-padding sixth win at 1-1/2 miles on the Keeneland turf since the ’06 fall meeting. Julien Leparoux rides, and he shares the most wins at this distance by a jockey during that span (4, with Robby Albarado, who rides Black Mamba).

I’ll take the late-flying Winter View on top of the gimmicks while heavily using Caprice, who was third in this race for trainer Graham Motion, who quietly is having a very big meeting with horses finishing in the money at a high rate.

Meet: October 2009

Race Date: 10/25/2009

Copy:
1st Race
JILLY FROM PHILLY (#4) has been knocking on the door at Arlington and drops in for a tag today. Trainer Hugh Robertson is having a good meet and leading rider Robby Albarado picks up the mount. Look for this one to break his maiden against this bunch. ROUND ABOUT (#7) has the tactical speed to be in contention throughout and is the one to beat. MR. REALISTIC (#2) rates a chance.

2nd Race
BAIL BABY BAIL (#2) won with something in reserve last out at Turfway and is the only runner in this field with two career wins. He should handle the added distance and looks like a solid bet to win for trainer Mike Maker and jockey Julien Leparoux. LUCKYLEAD (#7) has run well since he was dropped to this level. He is proven around two turns and is the one to beat. FOREIGN EXCHANGE (#1) is a runner trained by Todd Pletcher who won at first asking at Kentucky Downs.

3rd Race
JIMANATOR (#2) ran against better in a race over this track earlier in the meet. He won at this distance in Chicago and his best would be good enough to handle these. SHILAH (#11) also has the benefit of a recent start at Keeneland. He may be a bit closer to the pace today and is the one to beat. WHY FLY (#7) moves up in class after being claimed and fits in here.

4th Race
CAPE SAN BLAS (#10) looked good winning in his first try on the Polytrack. He moves up in class and faces a much tougher field today but he rates a slight edge at decent odds. RICHLAND CREEK (#2) ships in from New York for leading owner Ken Ramsey. He has been running against better and will be hard to beat at this level. KING OF SPEED (#7) is a veteran runner who is always dangerous.

5th Race
DANA’S BELL (#4) moves up in class after a sharp score. She has the speed to be in contention throughout and could make it two in a row for trainer John Good and jockey Robby Albarado. ARONIA (#11) won over this track back in April and looks dangerous despite the outside post. IRON BUTTERFLY (#2) drops in for a tag and definitely fits.

6th Race
FINAL COUNT (#3) lost a head-bobbing photo last out by a nose. He should move forward off of that start and rates the slight edge in an extremely tough allowance race. QUITE A HANDFUL (#4) was third in the Grade 3 Hawthorne Derby last out after getting the lead in midstretch. A similar performance makes him the one to beat. MEDJOOL (#1) takes a big class drop and has to be considered.

7th Race
DONNA GETYOURGUN (#11) just missed in her debut and was well clear of the third-place finisher in that one. Trainer Ian Wilkes adds blinkers for her return and she rates the edge in a race loaded with first-time starters. PIRATE PARTY (#8) makes her debut for trainer Tom Proctor and has been training well over the Keeneland surface. She could be dangerous at first asking. BABY SISTER (#9) rates a chance.

8th Race – Rood & Riddle Dowager
BLACK MAMBA (#11) has lost three narrow decisions to Magical Fantasy, who has won three straight Grade 1 races in California. She drops a notch in class for her first race at Keeneland and looks like a solid bet if the turf is firm today. WINTER VIEW (#1) won the Grey Goose Bewitch (G3) here in the spring and trainer Jonathan Sheppard will have her ready for another top effort today. LEMONETTE (#7) has the class and would move up if the turf is a bit softer.

9th Race
DEVIL APPROVED IT (#5) was no match for Workinontherailroad last out but that one came back to win here earlier this week. Both of his career wins have come on the Polytrack and he looks best in here. HOT ESCAPADE (#2) was claimed off a winning effort and has the speed to be on or near the lead. If he takes to the surface he will be tough to catch. SILVER EMBER (#9) could add value to the gimmicks.

Meet: October 2009

Race Date: 10/25/2009

Article Order: 1

Copy:
The Rood and Riddle Dowager draws a solid group of fillies and mares to go a 1 1/2 mile over the turf course. Winter View is making her 2nd start off a brief layoff and she likes this turf course. Winner of the Bewitch here in the spring, the 5 year old mare hasn't missed a check in 3 starts over this course. Jonathan Sheppard trains and Leparoux returns to the irons. Black Mamba is one fast female and has kept some tough company. She exits a very strong 3rd place finish in the Grade 1 Yellow Ribbon and has posted a sharp work since that race. Albarado lands in the saddle for trainer John Sadler. Lemonette has been very consistent this year and can boast a win at this distance. She is trained by Eric Reed with Theriot handling the reins. Caprice is another to watch. She is very accomplished at this distance while keeping solid company.

Handicapper: Bill Howard

Meet: October 2009

Race Date: 10/25/2009

Article Order: 1

Copy:
BLACK MAMBA missed by a diminishing half-length in the Yellow Ribbon-G1 at Santa Anita last time out going a mile and a quarter and seems well-spotted to return to the winner's circle today; she has won back-to-back renewals of the Beverly Hills-G2 going a mile and a quarter and a 1 3/8 mile stake at Del Mar two back; with earnings pushing a million dollars, she should be hard to keep out of the winner's circle today. WINTER VIEW missed by a half-length in the Claire Marine at Arlington last time out after closing from last place; she has won twice here at Keeneland, including the 1 1/2 mile Bewitch-G3 on turf last spring; she loves this turf course and distance and won't give in easily. CAPRICE also excels over 1 1/2 miles and has collected checks all year in stakes company; like that Rose is up on her today, since he guided her to that stakes win at Delaware going 1 3/8 miles two races back. BALLYNOE got up in the last stride to capture the Claire Marine Stakes last time out over WINTER VIEW and has improved with each start this year; she has worked 3 times over the poly here for Proctor, whose barn has a 29% win percentage this meet. LEMONETTE disappointed in the Yellow Ribbon-G1 last time out, but a return to the form that she displayed winning the 1 1/2 mile Gaily Stakes at Arlington this summer puts her in the mix.
