Dixiana New Sponsor for Breeders’ Futurity; Enhanced Graded Status for TCA, Woodford and Fayette Stakes
Keeneland has scheduled 19 stakes worth $5.125 million for its 2009 fall race meeting, to be held October 9-31. Highlighting the fall stakes schedule is the announcement of Mr. and Mrs. William Shively’s Dixiana as the new sponsor for the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity, and the elevation in graded status for the Thoroughbred Club of America, Woodford and Fayette Stakes.
Keeneland’s opening FallStars Weekend, October 9-11, will feature nine graded stakes, five of which are Grade 1 – the $500,000 Darley Alcibiades, for 2-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles on Friday; Saturday’s $600,000 Shadwell Turf Mile, for 3-year-olds and up, $500,000 Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity, for 2-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles and $400,000 First Lady, for older fillies and mares at one mile on the turf; and the $500,000 Juddmonte Spinster, for older fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles on Sunday.
ESPN Classic will provide live coverage of the Shadwell Turf Mile and Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity during its racing coverage from 5-7:30 p.m. ET on October 10. On Sunday, the Juddmonte Spinster and Bourbon (G3) will be carried live by ESPN from 5-6 p.m.
“We are very happy to welcome Dixiana to Keeneland’s family of race sponsors,” said Director of Racing Rogers Beasley. “The history of Dixiana is as rich and storied in racing as that of the Breeders’ Futurity.”
Sixteen of the fall’s 19 stakes are graded, including the $500,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (G1), an internationally renowned invitational for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/8 miles on the turf, slated for Saturday, October 17.
The graded status of three fall stakes recently was elevated by the American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association. The Thoroughbred Club of America, for fillies and mares, three-years-old and up, at 6 furlongs, and the closing day Fayette, for three-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles, were each promoted from Grade 3 to Grade 2 status, while the Woodford, for three-year-olds and up at 5 ½ furlongs on the turf, was elevated from listed to Grade 3 status. Total stakes purses were reduced by $275,000 from last fall: Thoroughbred Club of America (reduced by $50,000), Woodford ($25,000), Bourbon ($75,000), Perryville presented by Budweiser Select ($50,000), Bryan Station ($25,000), Sycamore ($25,000) and Rood & Riddle Dowager ($25,000).
“Keeneland’s stakes purses continue to rank among the highest in North America,” Beasley said. “The reduction in stakes purses is a result of the economic climate, which has led to declines in both live and simulcast wagering revenues.”
Keeneland will host nine Breeders’ Cup Challenge races during the 17-day fall meeting. The Breeders’ Cup Challenge is a series of automatic qualifying races for the $25.5 million 2009 Breeders’ Cup World Championships, to be held November 6-7 during Santa Anita’s Oak Tree Meeting.
Eight Breeders’ Cup Challenge races will be run during Keeneland’s FallStars Weekend. Those stakes and the qualifying Breeders’ Cup race are: Darley Alcibiades (Juvenile Fillies), Phoenix (Sprint), Shadwell Turf Mile (Mile), Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity (Juvenile), First Lady (Filly and Mare Turf), Thoroughbred Club of America (Filly and Mare Sprint), Juddmonte Spinster (Ladies’ Classic) and Bourbon (Juvenile Turf). The J.P. Morgan Chase Jessamine on October 15 will serve as the Breeders’ Cup Challenge race for the Juvenile Fillies Turf.
