Body, bath and beyond

Excerpt from the Spring 2009 program;
 
Few things are more luxurious that a warm shower or bath after strenuous exercise. Bubbles cascade over the skin, Soothing water eases tired muscles while removing every trace of grime and sweat. The aroma of soap invigorates the senses, resulting in a feeling of renewal and refreshment.

 

Perhaps that sensation is why Thoroughbreds stand contentedly while their handlers bath them with buckets of tepid soapy water after a morning exercise or an afternoon race. The horses appear to truly enjoy the process, which is an important part if their routines as equine athletes and is indicative of the meticulous care they receive at the racetrack.

 

Watching a racehorse being bathed also seems to be a form of therapy for many horsemen, who will observe the procedure after a horse races poorly as if the reason for the loss will magically be revealed.
