Furthest Land, who was claimed for $35,000 less than six months ago, won the $65,400 Cedar Point Purse, Keeneland’s feature race on Sunday.
The 4-year-old son of Smart Strike carried jockey Julien Leparoux to his third win of the afternoon while posting his fifth victory in 11 career starts. He ran the 1 1/16 miles on Polytrack in 1:43.10.
Furthest Land passed Wicked Style, the 2007 Breeders’ Futurity winner, with an eighth of a mile remaining and gradually pulled away to a 2 ¼-length win in the field of six 4-year-olds and upward.
Wicked Style held on for second, a length in front of third-place Hyracotherium. It was two lengths back to fourth-place Mambo in Seattle, runner-up to Colonel John in last year’s Travers Stakes (G1).
Ken and Sarah Ramsey own Furthest Land, who paid $11.80 and increased his career earnings to $156,506. The winner is trained by Michael Maker, who scored his second victory of the afternoon.
