Taking the lead with three-sixteenths of a mile remaining, Ballast (IRE) held off Yate’s Black Cat to win the featured $52,325 Heaven Trees Purse Wednesday at Keeneland.

The 7-year-old son of Desert Prince (IRE) ran 1 1/16 miles on the firm turf in 1:42.52 and gave jockey Jeremy Rose and trainer Graham Motion their second wins of the afternoon.

Ballast won for the eighth time in 31 career starts and increased his career earnings to $445,549 with the winner’s purse of $31,062.  The winner paid $11.60 as the second choice.

Yate’s Black Cat rallied from last to finish second, a neck behind the winner.  He was a length in front of third-place Stream of Gold (IRE), the favorite, in the field of 10 4-year-olds and upward.
